Is It Just a Phase or Something More? Signs Your Teen Might Be Depressed

Teen years are full of ups and downs. One day, they’re full of energy, the next they barely say a word. So how do you know when it’s just normal teenage moodiness and when it’s something more serious?
The biggest difference between typical teen struggles and depression is persistence. A bad day or a tough week is one thing, but if your teen has been withdrawn, irritable, or struggling for more than a couple of weeks, it’s worth paying closer attention. Other signs to look for include:
Loss of interest in things they once enjoyed
Extreme fatigue or difficulty sleeping
Sudden changes in appetite
Increased irritability or frequent crying
Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
Talking about death or suicide
If you’re noticing these signs, don’t ignore them. Start by opening up a conversation—not with accusations or demands, but with gentle curiosity. “I’ve noticed you haven’t been yourself lately. I just want you to know I’m here for you.” Your teen may not open up right away, but knowing you’re paying attention can make a big difference.
It’s okay to feel uncertain about what to do next. That’s why I offer a free Kick Your Teen’s Depression to the Curb session to help parents understand what’s happening and how to take the next step. You don’t have to figure it out alone, and neither does your teen.
Depression can be overwhelming, but with the right support, things can get better. Keep watching, keep listening, and most importantly, keep letting your teen know they’re not alone.
